Migrants always bring knowledge and skills with them.
Knowledge that has journeyed across the globe brings the insight of different perspectives, dialogue and translation. In many cases, however, knowledge that migrants bring with them is dismissed by societal structures and rendered invisible.
People seeking asylum often find that they are unable to use their professional training and qualifications in Switzerland. A one-sided culture of integration forces them to adapt not only themselves, but also their knowledge, thought processes and abilities to fit societal norms and requirements.
Abendschule Import aims to create a space in the face of this pressure to render migrant knowledge visible and to enable migrants to share their knowledge with an interested public.
The curriculum can touch upon many varied spheres of expertise, from philosophy, history or physics to art, sport or handicrafts.
Professional experience and practical skills, as well as perspectives in a global, political context and Swiss society itself play a role in shaping the courses.
Two experts teach parallel courses each evening.
Following the course, all participants and teachers meet for something to eat and drink at the buffet and to continue the conversation and exchange.
Abendschule Import has been running since 2016 in Zurich, Fribourg and Basel.
